Bunker Hill

The Battle of Bunker Hill June 17, 1775.

Who:  The British and Americans

The British troops of the Boston Garrison had Major General Howe, and they had about 2,400 troops. The American Continental Army, they had General Artemas Ward, and General Israel Putnam, with approximately 1,500 troops.

What: The Battle of Bunker Hill: 1500 Americans on the top of Breed's hill and Bunker hill were looking out at the city. About 2,400 British attacked the Americans traveling up the hill. The American colonists waited until the British were about 150 feet away before shooting. From doing this, they killed or wounded about 1000 troops, while the Americans only had about 400 killed or wounded. The British attempted 3 times; the first 2 times they failed, and the last time they succeeded. The Americans had lost only because they were out of ammunition. This battle was a Pyrrhic victory for the British. 3 months later, George Washington took over and placed the cannons from Ticonderoga on high land, forcing the British to leave.

Why: Before the British ambushed, the Americans were trying to surround the Boston Harbor. The whole night, the colonists built a fort on Breed’s hill in order to try and control. The British found out, and immediately planned for attack. Colonists were afraid of being attacked from the back, so the retreated to Bunker Hill, which this battle is known for.

How this affected the beginnings of the Revolutionary War
The Battle of Bunker Hill showed that the British were unorganized, and undisciplined. This also proved that Americans could fight and stand up to British soldiers. This battle did not solve the Britain’s problems in Boston, because the city was still surrounded by Americans. By July 1775, a month after this battle, George Washington took charge of the combatants. He realized that the army needed extra and potent weapons to compel the British from Boston. From the weapons at Ticonderoga, they were brought over 300 miles of mountains and tough terrain to Boston. This journey took 3 months. In March 1776, Washington positioned cannons on high ground in order to defend the city, which eventually forced the British to depart. This battle also gave the colonists hope that they could still defeat the British. This was probably one of the first battles to start the Revolutionary War.
